Strathearn Park Lodge were very honoured to host two wonderful boys, Harrison and Cooper Bucknall, on their recent trip to the Upper Hunter to help out drought-affected farmers.
Harrison 11 and Cooper 9 had recently participated in a fundraiser organised by Curl Curl North High School that raised over $5000. Having been made aware of the plight of Australia’s farmers, the boys really wanted to do more and decided to buy some hay with their own money and deliver it to a farmer.
Dad Ian Bucknall stepped in to help his sons with the task. Sourcing the hay bale was the first difficulty – it took several weeks and many phone calls before he finally secured a bale of Lucerne hay, all the way down in Bowral!
The boys paid for the bale with their savings and Ian got in touch with Coast Hire in Brookvale to hire a trailer to transport it. Tom, the manager of Coast Hire, on hearing the boys’ story, refused to charge Ian the rental fee, thus making his own contribution to the donation.
The bale was picked up and the long drive from Bowral to the Upper Hunter was undertaken. Once they arrived the bale was delivered to grateful local farmer David Carter. As the boys helped to unload it they couldn’t believe what hard work it was.
Job done, the boys were keen to stay and spend money in the area to further contribute to the local economy, and so we welcomed Ian, Harrison and Cooper at Strathearn Park Lodge for two nights. While on their stay they ventured out and explored the local area and ate at a local hotel each night.
We loved having them as we were so impressed by this community spirit in boys so young.
