Burning Mountain

Burning Mountain – Mount Wingen

Early settlers thought the smoke emanating from Mount Wingen was volcanic but it’s actually the world’s oldest known underground coal seam fire. Today you can take a walk around the area along a well constructed and informative track. The combustion, occurring at a depth of 30 metres, has caused interesting discolourisations to the soil and changes to the local flora. Conveniently placed seats offer both rest and vantage points to admire the views. The walk starts at the Burning Mountain Rest Area car park and is a 4.6km round walk.
