Welcome to our new Strathearn Park Lodge website!

We’ve made some improvements with this new design, aimed to give you even more information and add to your holiday experience.

Strathearn Park Lodge was made for relaxing, but for those times when you want to get out and explore the great region of the Upper Hunter we’ve put together a comprehensive page of suggestions for exploring during your stay. From natural marvels to wineries, historic towns and horse events, there’s so much to see and do!

We have also listed our favourite cafe and restaurant recommendations to make dining while in the Scone area even easier. There’s a few excellent fine dining options that are well worth trying, but for us the best meals are often to be had in the many historic pubs scattered about the region.

Our Shed at the Lodge

he beginnings of this shed started some 800 years ago in the Upper Hunter, before white man came, in a growing Iron Bark tree.

The timber for the shed, the fence to the south and the heavy wooden furniture on the homestead’s verandahs came from stables built in the 1840s for the Uniting Church in Scone.

The stables were demolished and moved to Strathearn Park Lodge in 1995 by Peter, your host, and Lyn’s father Harry Harvey. They then utilised the skills of a Moonan Flats bushman to build an authentic slab hut, the fence, furniture and coat racks on the front and back verandahs.

The woodsman dated the original stables as having been built in the 1840s. This was due the straightness of the timber which indicated that the stables were erected by the first wave of settlers.

Many wedding groups utilise the shed and the adjacent old truck for their photos.

Melbourne Cup Winner Australian Jockey Johnny Letts

e were graced by one of the great legends of Australian horse racing, Former Melbourne Cup Winner and champion bloke, jockey Johnny Letts. John stayed with us while he performed his ambassadorial duties around our wonderful horse capital town of Scone. John Richard “Johnny” Letts is a former Australian jockey whose career spanned almost 30 years, retiring from race riding in 1988. Letts began riding as an apprentice in 1959, aged 16 years old and eventually rode over 2,300 winners. He was immortalized by winning the Melbourne Cup twice on Piping Lane in 1972 and Beldale Ball in 1980.

Scone was an obvious destination and was selected among 38 other towns and cities across the globe, as part of the Victoria Racing Club’s 17th annual Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour. This initiative is bringing the cup to the people around the country to share the stories of the legends connected to the race. John was here to speak about the importance of bringing the magic of the Melbourne Cup to regional areas like Scone and Aberdeen. Thanks for staying with us Johnny!
